Public Wi‑Fi Safety Checklist

Public Wi‑Fi is convenient — and also one of the easiest places for attackers to snoop on unprotected traffic. Use this quick checklist before you connect.
Before you join the network
- Confirm the exact network name with staff (fake “look‑alike” hotspots are common).
- Turn off auto‑join/auto‑connect for public networks.
- Avoid networks that require no password and look suspicious.
While you’re online
- Prefer sites that use HTTPS (a padlock alone isn’t a guarantee, but it helps).
- Avoid banking or entering sensitive info if you can wait.
- Use a VPN for an extra layer of encryption on the network.
- Use 2FA on important accounts.
Tip: If you’re on a work laptop, check whether your company already provides a secure connection method.
After you’re done
- “Forget” the network in your Wi‑Fi settings (so your device doesn’t auto‑reconnect later).
- Update your browser and operating system regularly.
