Passwords & 2FA: The Fastest Security Upgrade
Last updated: 27 February 2026 • Accounts • 5 min read
If you do just one thing for online security: use unique passwords and turn on two‑factor authentication (2FA). This stops a huge percentage of account takeovers.
Use a password manager
- Generate unique, long passwords for every site.
- Store them securely so you don’t need to reuse or write them down.
Turn on 2FA (the right way)
- Best: authenticator apps or security keys.
- Okay: SMS codes (better than nothing, but less secure).
Watch for these common mistakes
- Reusing the same password across multiple sites.
- Sharing verification codes with anyone (even “support”).
- Ignoring breach alerts — change passwords immediately.
Quick win: Start with email + banking + social accounts — protecting your email protects everything else.
